What is balance testing?

Turn Your Health Around

Balance tests are a class of tests used to detect balance abnormalities. A balance problem is a condition that causes you to feel dizzy and unstable on your feet. Dizziness is a catch-all phrase for a variety of symptoms. For example, vertigo, the sensation that you or your surroundings are spinning, and lightheadedness, the sensation that you are about to faint, are both symptoms of dizziness. Balance issues can be minor or severe, causing difficulty walking, climbing stairs, or doing other routine tasks.

What are the benefits of dizziness & balance testing?

Stop the Spin

Dizziness and balance problems can be symptoms of underlying diseases such as vertigo, Meniere's disease, migraines, tumors, or head traumas. Balance problems might impair your ability to walk and do other everyday tasks. Therefore, catching any issues is crucial before they develop into something more substantial. Some cases are minor, while others may be severe. Balance is established by the cooperation of several bodily systems, including the vestibular system located in the inner ear. Because balance is intimately related to these other systems, our staff at The Hearing Center with ENT Specialists PC provide these vital examinations.

Am I a good candidate for dizziness & balance testing?

Stand Strong

A person who has trouble maintaining their balance or walking, frequently feels dizzy or unstable, or has any of these symptoms is an excellent candidate for balance testing.

Your Dizziness & Balance Tests

Feel Grounded

Before conducting balance tests, a detailed grasp of a patient's symptoms and history is required. Patients fill out a lengthy questionnaire, and the vestibular expert performs an in-depth interview with each one. We will assess which battery of tests is ideal for you based on your history and symptoms to identify your anomaly and determine to what extent you may or may not have compensated so that a treatment plan may be developed.

Audiologic Assessment

Some inner ear problems can cause dizziness as well as hearing loss. Tone and speech audiometry tests will reveal the kind and degree of hearing loss and the ability to discriminate between words. In addition, acoustic immittance measurements give information on the health of the middle ear systems.

Videonystagmography

VNG examines the vestibular-ocular reflex, which permits the inner ear to feel motion and offers steady vision throughout head and body motions. The findings of VNG give information regarding inner ear function and the areas of the brain involved in balance and equilibrium. In addition, this test can tell you whether one or both of your inner ears are weak.

Electrophysiology Testing

Electrophysiology is the study of how the nervous system in our body functions. Our audiologists are trained to assess the function of primarily the hearing and balance nerves in the body. They are able to perform these evaluations through three main tests:

  • Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR): this test can assess hearing loss and overall function of the hearing nerve.
  • Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials (VEMPs): these tests provide a measure of the inner ear region responsible for gravity perception and other head and body motions. This test can also be beneficial in evaluating if the bony portion of the inner ear is compromised.
  • Electrocochleography (EcOG): this is a test that investigates the presence of a disorder of the inner ear that can lead to dizzy spells and hearing loss called Meniere’s Disease.
